The Congo Rainforest is also known as the 'Centre of Africa' and is 200 million square miles large which means it is the second largest rainforest in the world with only the Amazon being bigger. Within those 200 million square miles live the largest concentration of animals than anywhere else in Africa with 450 species of mammals, 300 reptile species, 200 amphibian species, and over 1,000 birds species living in the Congo rainforest. Some of those animals are incredibly rare with the Bonobos, who are the closest relatives to humans, being found only in this rainforest and nowhere else in the world. Additionally, the Congo Rainforest is the only place in the world where all three subspecies of gorillas can be found and these three species are the mountain gorilla, the lowland gorilla and the eastern lowland gorilla.
Within the forest there are 11,000 forest plants that have been identified and 1,100 of these are found nowhere else and around 69 of these species are threatened. As a result of the thick vegetation only 1% of the sunlight reaches the ground in the most dense parts of the rainforest. Those who are fighting to cure cancer have identified approximately 1,400 rainforest plants which could potentially be used to fight cancer which shows that rainforests are helpful in so many different ways.
